Herbal Baths

So many midwives are offering Herbal Baths after your birth and I absolutely love this! There are so many healing properties for mom and baby, and they are such a great opportunity for me as your birth photographer to capture some truly special photos!

An herbal bath is prepared like a big batch of tea! Herbs are placed in a bag and boiled then steeped. I have seen it prepared in a pot on the stove, in a slow cooker, as well as in an instant pot. When it is time for the bath itself, warm water is added to a clean tub, then the herbs poured in. The color can range from dark orange to green to brown depending on the herbs used. At this point, fresh cut flowers and greenery can be added to the bath for photos, but are purely for pictures and do not offer any additional benefits.
So what herbs are typically included in the herbal bath? Some common herbs include Yarrow, shepherd's purse, oatstraw, lavender, uvaursi, comfrey, and chamomile. Different herbalists/producers will have their own special blend and will vary from brand to brand.
Now are there any contraindactions for an herbal bath immediately post partum? Absolutely. I have seen many mamas take a little dip after child birth with blood pressure concerns, blood loss, etc. and I always try to reschedule an herbal bath session with my clients for their 2 week postpartum visit as so many people love these pictures even if they are not immediately post partum! Still so soothing and healing to mom and baby! And bonus... no Umbilical cord to work around!
So tell me....Did your midwife offer you an herbal bath?
